Former New Jersey Police Officer sentenced for causing deaths while Driving While Intoxicated

On August 14, 2024, a Superior Court Judge, Jonathan W. Romankow, sentenced a former New Jersey police officer, Amitoj Oberoi to two concurrent terms of 15 years in State prison on charges of for first-degree vehicular homicide. 

A statement from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office on August 15th, revealed that Oberoi’s sentence includes serving 15 years with 85 per cent of the term to be served without the possibility for parole, as mandated by the “No Early Release Act.” Additionally, he received a sentence for Driving While Intoxicated.

​The convictions stem from a vehicle crash on August 27, 2023, on Route 27 in Franklin Township. The accident led to deaths of Carlos Perez-Gaytan, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, both passengers traveled in Oberoi’s vehicle at the time of the incident.
