Nepali Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal is scheduled to visit India on June 6 at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Khanal and Jaishankar met previously during the 9th Indian Ocean Conference in Mauritius earlier this year.

During his upcoming trip, the two leaders are expected to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties across a range of sectors, including boosting cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, and strengthening people-to-people ties, Nepal Khabar said.

Khanal’s visit comes on the heels of a high-profile trip to the Indian capital by Nepal’s ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Rabi Lamichhane, who held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, S Jaishankar and senior BJP leaders.

During Lamichhane’s meeting with Modi, PM Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and discussed ways to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The discussions reportedly focused on expanding economic cooperation, improving cross-border infrastructure and digital connectivity, and further deepening the deep civilizational and people-to-people links between New Delhi and Kathmandu.

According to members of the RSP delegation who accompanied Lamichhane, the discussions held during his trip will help shape the agenda for the upcoming diplomatic engagement.

Deepak Bohara, a member of the RSP Secretariat accompanying Lamichhane in India, said a “checklist” of bilateral issues would be prepared ahead of Khanal’s meeting.

Lamichhane also held separate talks with Jaishankar during his visit, with discussions focusing on development cooperation, connectivity and expanding exchanges between the two countries.

Describing the meeting afterwards, Jaishankar said the conversation centered on strengthening the Nepal-India development partnership and enhancing people-to-people engagement, which he characterized as essential to shared prosperity and growth.

Issuing a formal statement regarding the visit, the Nepal Foreign Ministry said, “As part of the regular exchange of high-level visits, this visit will further consolidate the enduring and multifaceted bilateral relations between Nepal and India.”

The Nepali FM is scheduled to conclude his visit and return to Kathmandu on June 7.
