The Indian diaspora in Houston hosted a public reception for India’s Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, on September 13, 2026, at India House.
The minister was visiting Houston to represent India at the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting from September 14-16 in Houston.
Professionals, entrepreneurs, students, cultural leaders and representatives of regional associations attended the reception.
Consul General of India in Houston D.C. Manjunath formally welcomed the minister on behalf of the community and thanked him for taking time from his G20 ministerial engagements to interact with members of the diaspora.
“The reception showcased Houston’s vibrant and civically engaged Indian community, one that maintains deep ties with India while contributing significantly to the economic, cultural, and social fabric of the United States,” a statement noted.
The gathering also reflected the pride of Houston’s Haryanvi community, represented by HARIT, in welcoming a leader who served as chief minister of Haryana for nearly a decade.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Lal shared his perspectives on “India’s development journey, the nation’s growing global role, and the importance of strengthening bonds with the Pravasi Bharatiya community.”
He praised the Indian diaspora’s contributions and encouraged its members to remain engaged in advancing India-U.S. cooperation and progress.
In a separate event marking Hindi Diwas 2026, the Consulate General of India in Houston, in collaboration with the International Hindi Association’s Houston chapter, hosted a Sahityik Milan, or literary gathering.
The program celebrated the “richness, inclusivity, and vibrancy” of the Hindi language and brought together Hindi enthusiasts from across the region.
According to the consulate, the minister’s presence and message enhanced the program’s “splendor” and “infused” new energy and enthusiasm among attendees. The consulate thanked Hindi enthusiasts, volunteers and partner organizations in the Houston area for their contributions to the event.
