The Consulate General of India (CGI) in New York, in collaboration with the Times Square Alliance, celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga at the iconic Times Square on June 21, 2026, attracting nearly 10,000 yoga enthusiasts from a wide range of nationalities.
According to CGI New York, the day-long event featured seven yoga sessions held throughout the day, underscoring the growing popularity of yoga across New York City and the United States.
The celebrations were attended by Padma Shri Guruji Dr. H.R. Nagendra, a globally recognized yoga master and meditation expert. Addressing participants, Guru Nagendra spoke about the “timeless relevance” of yoga and meditation in promoting a “healthy and harmonious” lifestyle.

“He encouraged participants to embrace yoga not merely as an ancient tradition, but as a practical and transformative discipline for modern living,” CGI New York said in a statement.
Consul General Binaya Pradhan highlighted the growing acceptance of yoga in the United States, noting its increasing integration into the daily lives of Americans and the Indian American community.
This year’s observance of the International Day of Yoga was organized around the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizing yoga’s role in promoting longevity, well-being, and an improved quality of life.

In the weeks leading up to the main event, the Consulate conducted a series of yoga sessions and community outreach programs across its jurisdiction, including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
According to CGI, the month-long initiatives drew enthusiastic participation from local communities and yoga practitioners, helping to further strengthen “awareness and engagement” with the practice of yoga.
