Tamil Nadu Chief Minister arrives in San Francisco to seek investments for the state

In a bid to strengthen ties between Tamil Nadu and the United States, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, and his high-level delegation arrived in San Francisco on April 29, 2024. The delegation, including Industries Minister TRB Rajaa and other senior officials, aims to explore investment and development opportunities for the state.

Consul General of India in San Francisco, Dr. K. Srikar Reddy along with community leaders and members of the Tamil diaspora welcomed CM Stalin and his wife Durgavathy Stalin, at the airport. A cultural performance highlighting Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage was also organized to welcome the Chief Minister.

In San Francisco, CM Stalin addressed the “Investors Conclave,” and had discussions with investors, business leaders, and officials to promote Tamil Nadu as a top investment destination in areas like technology, manufacturing, and infrastructure. He also invited global investors to Tamil Nadu, noting the state offers “boundless potential and vast opportunities.”

As such, the state received investments totaling $108 million (₹900 crores) for Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Chengalpattu, leading to the creation of 4,100 new jobs across various sectors.

Notable contributions include $54 million (₹450 crores) from Nokia, generating 100 jobs; PayPal, offering 1,000 jobs; $18 million (₹150 crores) from Yield Engineering Systems, creating 300 jobs; $30 million (₹250 crores) from Microchip, resulting in 1,500 jobs; $6 million (₹50 crores) from Infinx, leading to 700 jobs; and $12 million (₹100 crores) creating 500 jobs from Applied Materials.

MR Rangaswami, founder of Indiaspora that co-hosted the Investors Conclave noted “Tamil Nadu represents almost 10 per cent of India’s GDP and has an excellent education system, highest women participation in the workforce, and is a leader in electronics.”

The Chief Minister mentioned that in the next few weeks he will intensify efforts to seek additional investments to the state, towards a trillion-dollar economy. He is also set to address the Tamil diaspora, showcasing the state’s achievements and future economic growth plans.

After San Francisco, CM Stalin will visit Chicago, Illinois, to meet with business leaders and explore investment opportunities.
