President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have expressed their condolences on the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, joining the people of India in mourning his loss.
In a statement issued on December 27, 2024, President Biden praised PM Singh as a “true statesman,” “dedicated public servant,” and “kind and humble person.” Reflecting on Singh’s contributions, Biden remarked, “The unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and India today would not have been possible without the Prime Minister’s strategic vision and political courage.”
He highlighted key milestones of Singh’s tenure, including the historic U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement and the establishment of the first Quad alliance among Indo-Pacific partners, noting these achievements have paved the way for enduring progress and strengthened global relations.
“I had the chance to meet Prime Minister Singh as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2008 and as Vice President during his Official State Visit to the United States in 2009. He also graciously hosted me in New Delhi in 2013,” noted the statement. “As we discussed then, the U.S.-India relationship is among the most consequential in the world. And together, as partners and friends, our nations can unlock a future of dignity and unlimited potential for all of our people.”
During this difficult time, President Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the shared vision championed by PM Singh and extended his deepest sympathies to Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur, their three children, and the people of India. “Jill and I send our deepest condolences,” he said, honoring Singh’s lasting legacy.
