India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance met in New Delhi on April 21, 2025, to review and positively assess progress in key areas of U.S.-India bilateral cooperation.

According to a statement from the Embassy of India, the leaders exchanged views on a range of regional and global issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward.

Prime Minister Modi fondly recalled his visit to Washington, D.C. in February and his “fruitful discussions with President Donald Trump.” The statement noted that the meeting between PM Modi and President Trump “laid down the roadmap for close cooperation between India and the U.S., leveraging the strengths of Make America Great Again (MAGA) and Viksit Bharat 2047.”

Vice President Vance is on an official visit to India, accompanied by Second Lady Usha Vance, their children, and senior members of the U.S. administration. Their itinerary includes stops in New Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

At the meeting, PM Modi extended his best wishes to the Vice President and his family for a “pleasant and productive stay in India,” and conveyed his greetings to President Trump, expressing hope for his visit later this year for the Quad Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi.

A statement from Vice President Vance’s office emphasized that both leaders welcomed “significant progress in the negotiations for a U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA),” and announced the finalization of the Terms of Reference for the negotiations. This development lays the groundwork for future discussions aligned with shared economic priorities.

“The BTA presents an opportunity to negotiate a new and modern trade agreement focused on promoting job creation and citizen well-being in both countries, with the goal of enhancing bilateral trade and supply-chain integration in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner,” the statement added. “Guided by their respective visions of ‘Amrit Kaal for India’ and ‘Golden Age for America,’ BTA is expected to create new opportunities of growth for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries.”

The statement also referenced the “positive and successful,” meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on February 13th at the White House.

During that meeting, both leaders reaffirmed the strength of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and jointly launched the India-U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) – a 21st-century initiative rooted in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill, and strong people-to-people engagement.

“The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to review the progress achieved in bilateral relations and the implementation of the outcomes of the India-U.S. Joint Statement issued on 13 February 2025. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest,” the statement added.
