The Gujarati Associations of North America (GANA), in partnership with the Consulate General of India in New York and the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE, hosted the tenth consecutive Gujarat Maharashtra Day on May 1, 2026.
Held at the Consulate, the event brought together members of the Indian diaspora, dignitaries, elected officials, and artists, marking a significant cultural milestone with a focus on shared heritage and identity, according to a statement from FIA.
India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, attended the event and extended greetings to the gathering. He commended GANA for organizing the celebration in collaboration with the Consulate, noting that such initiatives go beyond festivity by strengthening unity, preserving cultural heritage, and ensuring its continuity across generations. He also paid tribute to notable figures from Gujarat and Maharashtra, emphasizing that their legacies reflect the values and spirit of their respective states.

Ambassador Kwatra highlighted that the two states together contribute nearly 25 percent of India’s total GDP. He underlined that the India–U.S. partnership is reflected both at the policy level and through state-level engagement, with the Gujarati and Marathi diaspora serving as a dynamic bridge between the two countries. He encouraged attendees to carry forward this cultural legacy for future generations.
Former Union Cabinet Minister Suresh Prabhu delivered a wide-ranging address, drawing parallels between India’s federal structure and the traditional concept of a joint family, where collective responsibility and shared growth are central. He described entrepreneurship as a defining trait of Gujarat and noted Maharashtra’s role as India’s financial capital, adding that both states are poised to contribute significantly to India’s economic ambitions.
The event also featured the presence of Indian actresses Archana Joglekar and Pooja Jhaveri as honored guests. Mayor Hemant Marathe of West Windsor Township and Mayor Pulkit Desai of Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey, were felicitated, reflecting the growing representation of Indian Americans in public office.

GANA President Srujal Parikh reflected on a decade of the celebration and highlighted the organization’s community initiatives, including service programs in India.
“These efforts are not just programs,” he said. “They are bridges between our past and our future, between our homeland and our home here, and between generations who will carry our culture forward.”
Parikh also acknowledged partner organizations and supporters for their continued collaboration and dedication over the years.
Ankur Vaidya, chairman of FIA NY-NJ-CT-NE and co-founder of GANA, emphasized the importance of collaboration across diaspora communities, noting the sustained participation of the Maharashtrian community over the past decade. He also extended greetings on the occasion of Vesak, reflecting the inclusive nature of the event.

FIA President Sreekanth Akkapalli expressed appreciation for GANA’s role in initiating and sustaining the Gujarat Maharashtra Day celebration in New York.
The cultural program featured performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Falu Shah and musician Hardik Chauhan, along with a dance presentation by the Dancing Stars team choreographed by Heena Gupte. The performances showcased a blend of Gujarati and Maharashtrian traditions, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation among younger generations.
Guests were served a vegetarian dinner prepared by community home chefs representing both Gujarati and Maharashtrian cuisines, underscoring the role of culinary traditions in preserving cultural identity.
Philanthropists Saurin Dave and Kenny Desai were recognized for their contributions through GANA’s initiatives. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by GANA Vice President Priti Ray-Patel and Secretary Smita Miki Patel, who also acknowledged media partners including South Asian Herald, as well as supporters Tak Group, TV Asia, Parikh Worldwide Media, Gauri, Andaaz, Bambino Express, and Paanwala.
