The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has announced a 20% promotional discount on its Buddhist Circuit Special Tourist Train for select departures between December 2026 and March 2027, as it looks to tap growing domestic and international demand for spiritual tourism.

The discounted departures are scheduled for December 19, 2026; January 2, February 20, and March 20, 2027. Under the offer, the all-inclusive package starts at ₹76,905 per person (approximately $920–$930, depending on exchange rates) on a twin-sharing basis.

The seven-night, eight-day journey originates from Safdarjung Railway Station in New Delhi and covers some of the most revered sites associated with Gautama Buddha’s life and teachings — including Bodh Gaya, where he is believed to have attained enlightenment; Nalanda via Rajgir, an ancient center of Buddhist learning; Varanasi with nearby Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon; Lumbini in Nepal, his birthplace; Kushinagar, where he attained Mahaparinirvana; and Shravasti, where he spent a significant part of his monastic life. The itinerary also includes a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Spiritual and geopolitical significance

The Buddhist Circuit is widely regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world, particularly for followers from East and Southeast Asia. Countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam collectively account for millions of Buddhist pilgrims annually, many of whom view these sites as central to their religious identity.

India has been actively promoting the circuit as part of its broader tourism and cultural diplomacy strategy, positioning it as a bridge to Buddhist-majority nations. The government has also invested in infrastructure upgrades across key sites to improve accessibility and visitor experience.

According to tourism estimates, Bodh Gaya and Sarnath alone attract hundreds of thousands of international visitors each year, while Lumbini remains a major draw in Nepal’s tourism sector. The circuit’s appeal extends beyond religious pilgrims to include heritage tourists, scholars and international travelers interested in ancient history and philosophy.

Premium rail tourism push

IRCTC’s Buddhist Circuit train is among its flagship experiential tourism offerings, combining pilgrimage with a luxury rail experience. The fully air-conditioned train features 12 modern LHB coaches equipped with upgraded safety features and passenger amenities.

Travelers can choose between AC First Class and AC Two Tier accommodations. The AC First Class cabins offer enhanced privacy with coupes and in-room lockers, while AC Two Tier coaches have been redesigned for greater comfort with more spacious layouts.

The train includes two dining cars with seating for up to 64 passengers each, and an onboard kitchen serving a mix of Indian and international cuisines. Off-train arrangements include stays at high-quality hotels and facilities for wash-and-change at key destinations.

Industry observers say curated rail journeys like this are gaining traction globally, particularly among older travelers and diaspora communities seeking structured, hassle-free itineraries that combine comfort with cultural depth.

IRCTC said the promotional discount is aimed at making the circuit more accessible while boosting occupancy during key travel windows. Bookings are available through its official portal and designated helplines.
