The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has appointed Sadanand Dhume as a senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia in its David Rockefeller Studies Program, the organization’s think tank. According to a CFR statement, his research will focus on the region’s political economy and foreign policy.
Dhume is also the author of the biweekly East Is East column in The Wall Street Journal, where he writes about South Asia’s politics, economy, and foreign affairs.
Before joining CFR, Dhume served as a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He previously worked as a foreign correspondent for Far Eastern Economic Review and The Wall Street Journal Asia, reporting from India and Indonesia.
“I am pleased to welcome Sadanand to our Studies Program,” said CFR Senior Vice President Shannon K. O’Neil. “Sadanand’s distinctive experience as a reporter and scholar covering South Asia will provide integral insight into this important and dynamic region and implications for U.S. foreign policy there.”
Dhume is the author of My Friend the Fanatic: Travels With a Radical Islamist and an upcoming book, Tinderbox: The Unpredictable Rise and Uncertain Future of Modern India. His writing has appeared in publications including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The National Interest, National Review, and The Wilson Quarterly.
According to the statement, Dhume has also appeared as a commentator on Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, PBS, NPR, and several Indian television networks.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia Journalism School, and a Master of Public Affairs degree from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.
