Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 23 held extensive talks with visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and enhancing cooperation on pressing regional and global challenges, including developments in West Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
The high-level meeting reflected the growing strategic alignment between New Delhi and Washington as the two democracies deepen collaboration in defense, trade, emerging technologies, energy security and regional stability amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Describing the discussions as productive, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to closer coordination with the United States on key international issues.
In a post on social media platform X following the meeting, Modi said he was “happy to receive” Secretary Rubio and noted the continued expansion of bilateral ties.
“We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that both countries would continue working together on issues of shared international concern. “India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,” Modi stated.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Rubio briefed Modi on progress achieved in bilateral cooperation across sectors such as defense, strategic technologies, trade and investment, connectivity, education, energy security and people-to-people exchanges.
The statement also noted that Rubio shared Washington’s perspective on several regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia.
During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s longstanding position favoring dialogue and diplomacy for resolving international conflicts. He stressed the importance of peaceful engagement and negotiations in addressing global disputes and reaffirmed India’s support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace.
Modi also conveyed warm greetings to US President Donald Trump through Rubio and expressed confidence in sustaining regular high-level engagement between the two nations.
The meeting highlighted the continued momentum in India-US relations, which have expanded significantly over the past decade across strategic, economic and technological domains. Both nations increasingly view each other as key partners in preserving regional stability and promoting a rules-based international order.
Sharing details of the interaction, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the meeting as constructive and forward-looking.
“Great to join Secretary of State Marco Rubio for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Gor wrote on X.
“We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies — areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!” he added.
Rubio’s visit comes at a time when India and the United States are expanding cooperation in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, emerging technologies, defense manufacturing, clean energy and counterterrorism. Coordination has also intensified through multilateral initiatives like the Quad, comprising India, the United States, Japan and Australia.
In recent years, the bilateral partnership has seen major developments, including expanded military interoperability agreements, technology-sharing initiatives and increased defense procurement collaboration. Both sides have consistently emphasized their shared commitment to ensuring a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific amid rising geopolitical competition.
Diplomatic observers view Rubio’s visit as part of sustained high-level engagement between the two countries as they navigate evolving security challenges in Asia and beyond. The discussions are also expected to help shape upcoming strategic engagements involving the Quad and the broader Indo-Pacific security framework.
Rubio arrived in New Delhi on Saturday after concluding a visit to Kolkata, where he paid respects at the Missionaries of Charity’s Mother House. During his stay in the national capital, he is also scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, attend the dedication ceremony of the new US Embassy Support Annex Building and participate in a reception at Roosevelt House hosted by Ambassador Gor.
The visit carries additional significance ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26. Foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan and Australia are expected to deliberate on Indo-Pacific security, maritime cooperation and regional developments, including the situation in West Asia.
As India and the United States continue to broaden their strategic partnership, Saturday’s meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Secretary Rubio underscored the growing convergence between the two countries on major global and regional issues, while signaling a shared commitment to deeper cooperation in an increasingly complex international landscape.
