Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on May 1 alleged that anti-democratic forces were at play once again and plotting to create instability in the country, as the country, according to him, was advancing again towards a democratic path.
“Whenever Bangladesh moves towards democracy, some quarters do not like it,” he said at a May Day rally organized by the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal in front of BNP’s central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan, reports Business Standard BD.
The Prime Minister alleged that certain quarters in the country didn’t want the people to change the nation’s course, claiming, “They do not want Bangladesh to move forward in step with the world. Those quarters have started conspiracies again, as they did in the past.”
He further said such conspiracies had failed before February 12, when the BNP government came to power. “Before the 12th, they saw that Bangladesh had started functioning according to the people’s will and had begun moving again on the path of democracy. Then they started new conspiracies in different forms,” he added. “They are now trying to push Bangladesh into a controversial position on the global stage and make it friendless. But the world sees that the current government has the support of the people and that it is a people-elected government.”
Lauding the leadership of his late mother and former premier Khaleda Zia, he said the country, under her leadership was beginning to be recognized as an “’emerging tiger’ on the world stage,” adding that the country was now again gaining traction internationally, and moving on a path to progress.
PM Rahman added that the international community was now again engaging with Bangladesh, as a democratically elected administration by the people was again in power, and looking for investment opportunities, and said that Dhaka must fully use this opportunity to boost national interest, especially in the interest of workers.
