Hindus for Human Rights Action (HfHR Action) has announced its endorsement of Vichal Kumar, who is running to represent New York’s 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

In a statement, HfHR Action described Kumar as a “proud progressive South Asian” committed to advocating for communities across Brooklyn and Queens.

“Vichal Kumar is a dedicated public servant and an exemplary progressive South Asian who will fight for our communities and all communities being attacked, vilified, and left behind by public figures and our political system at large,” said HfHR Action. “Vichal is a vocal champion for civil liberties and human rights here at home and abroad. He talks the talk and walks the walk, defending his community and fighting battles against a broken system alongside his neighbors in NY-07.”

The organization said it is proud to support Kumar in his bid to represent “working class, immigrant, everyday New Yorkers” in Congress. It added that Hindu Americans deserve a champion for dignity and a better future, expressing confidence that Kumar would advance “justice, peace, and truth every single day.”

“I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of Hindus for Human Rights Action. Their commitment to equity and their recognition of how our communities and issues intersect are values that have shaped my career and define our campaign. They represent the commitments that so many Hindu Americans have been waiting to see organized,” said Kumar. “For 20 years as a public defender, I’ve stood with the families this system was built to ignore, fighting for recognition, equity, and fundamental rights. I’m proud to take zero corporate money and run a community-based campaign that fights for all of us.”

The statement also noted that Kumar has received backing from Unrig Washington, an initiative that advocates overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision on corporate campaign financing and supports broader anti-corruption reforms.

“A public defender, and the son of working-class immigrants, Kumar has more than two decades of experience helping immigrant families facing deportation, tenants facing unlawful eviction, and working-class New Yorkers shut out of healthcare, employment, and basic public benefits,” the statement said.

Kumar began his legal career at The Bronx Defenders while attending Hofstra Law at night. He later built the Civil Defense Practice at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem and most recently served as Managing Director at Partners for Justice, where he expanded holistic defense programs nationwide, including in Illinois, Missouri, and Texas.

A past president of the South Asian Bar Association of North America (SABA) and the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY), Kumar has focused his career on building institutions that prioritize working communities.
