President-Elect Donald Trump Appoints Chennai-Born Tech Leader Sriram Krishnan as AI Policy Advisor

Indian Americans welcome the President-elect’s pick to serve in the important role.

President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Indian American Technology Entrepreneur, Sriram Krishnan as the Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

In a statement, the President-elect said “Working closely with David Sacks, Sriram will focus on ensuring continued American leadership in A.l., and help shape and coordinate A.I. policy across Government, including working with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Sriram started his career at Microsoft as a founding member of Windows Azure.â€

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Krishnan, who was born in Chennai, India, stated, “I’m honored to be able to serve our country and ensure continued American leadership in AI, working closely with the incoming White House AI and Crypto Czar, Sacks.â€

Sacks, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “It was fun to work with Krishnan on the X/Twitter transition. I’m looking forward to collaborating again on AI policy.†

He further praised Krishnan, noting, “Sriram is a well-known and well-liked figure in Silicon Valley, a sign of the extraordinary talent President Trump is attracting to his Administration.â€

Prominent members of the Indian American community have welcomed Krishnan’s appointment, recognizing its significance for AI leadership and representation.

MR Rangaswami, founder of Indiaspora and the Sand Hill Group, told South Asian Herald, “Sriram has been a longtime friend, and I have seen him go from strength to strength as a tech executive—from Microsoft to Facebook and Twitter.â€Â 

Rangaswami added, “I am very proud to see one of our very own Indiaspora members appointed to this critical AI policy role at the White House,†noting that Krishnan has been a prolific investor and most recently served in the high-profile Silicon Valley firm Andreessen Horowitz.

Executive Director of Indiaspora, Sanjeev Joshipura, also congratulated Krishnan noting that Indiaspora is delighted that he has been appointed to the important position. 

Joshipura praised Krishnan as “an insightful thinker and influential commentator in the artificial intelligence realm,†adding that his experience in public policy, international affairs, investing, and technology would serve him well in his new role. Indiaspora, he noted, looks forward to engaging closely with Krishnan as part of its ongoing AI-focused initiatives.

Chair of Virginia Asian Advisory Board, Srilekha Palle, told South Asian Herald, “As an Indian American, I am thrilled by President-elect Trump’s strategic focus on appointing industry experts like Sriram Krishnan to critical roles such as Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence.â€

According to Palle, this decision by the President-elect underscores a commitment to prioritizing qualifications and expertise above all else. Sriram’s impressive journey—from self-taught coder in Chennai to a trailblazer in technology and AI—reflects the excellence and innovation needed to ensure American leadership in this pivotal field. 

“This milestone is a win for the nation and a proud moment for the Indian American community. Congratulations to President-elect Trump for putting competence first and to Sriram for this well-deserved recognition,†added Palle. 

Executive Director of the American Hindu Coalition, Alok Srivastava, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology and senior member of Association for Computing Machinery and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, highlighted the importance of Krishnan’s expertise. 

Srivastava told South Asian Herald â€œSriram Krishnan’s appointment to this senior role will significantly enhance U.S. leadership in AI innovation and policy,†praising Krishnan’s extensive background in technology and venture capital, including roles at Microsoft, Facebook, Snap, and Twitter. He added that Krishnan is well-positioned to “help shape policies fostering innovation, ethical AI development, and global competitiveness.â€

Srivastava also commended Krishnan’s ability to integrate technology into public policy and emphasized the value of his global perspective, shaped by his work at Andreessen Horowitz. “Indian-origin IT professionals like Krishnan continue to play a pivotal role in bolstering the United States’ leadership in technology on the world stage,†he noted with pride.
