The Menil Collection has commissioned Mumbai-based artist Jitish Kallat for the eighth installment of the Menil Drawing Institute’s ephemeral Wall Drawing Series, which will be on view from September 10, 2026, through August 8, 2027.
Kallat will also participate in an artist talk on September 10 at 7 p.m., where he will discuss his artistic practice and the newly commissioned work.
According to a statement from the Menil Collection, Kallat is a leading figure in contemporary Indian art whose work explores a wide range of subjects and disciplines.
“His work often probes the intersections of the intimate and the immense, weaving together references to history, science, philosophy, and the cosmic scale of time. Over the past three decades, he has developed a multifaceted practice spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and time-based media,” the statement said.
Kallat has exhibited extensively at major international institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai.
His work has also been presented at Tate Modern in London, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. He has participated in the Venice, Gwangju, Havana, Curitiba, and Kiev biennales. In 2014, Kallat served as artistic director and curator of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale.
“Wall Drawing Series: Jitish Kallat” is curated by Edouard Kopp, John R. Eckel, Jr. Foundation Chief Curator at the Menil Drawing Institute.
Launched in 2018, the Wall Drawing Series reflects the institute’s commitment to exploring new approaches to the form and language of drawing. Previous participating artists include Marc Bauer, Mel Bochner, Roni Horn, Marcia Kure, Gladys Nilsson, Ronny Quevedo, and Jorinde Voigt.
