Indian Diplomatic Missions and Community Members Pay Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 155th birth anniversary on October 2, 2024, at the Embassy of India in Washington DC.

Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, Deputy Chief of Mission, Sripriya Ranganathan, and other Embassy officials were present during the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Indian consulates in the United States and India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish also celebrated the Mahatma’s birth anniversary and commemorated the UN International Day of Non-Violence.

The Indian Consulate in New York celebrated the event at Union Square Park. The Gandhi statue, which was unveiled on his 117th birth anniversary in 1986 symbolizes peaceful resistance and social change. 

Members of the Indian community gathered to pay tribute to Gandhi, honoring his legacy with floral offerings.

Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan spoke “about the principles of Mahatma Gandhi which have touched hearts worldwide and are more relevant than ever to build a world of peace, understanding, and mutual respect,” according to a tweet from the Consulate.  

The ceremony featured a melodious rendition of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite bhajans, emphasizing his teachings of peace and non-violence.

In Houston, Consul General Manjunath Chennarappa, along with the Indian diaspora, paid floral tributes to Gandhi and marked the UN International Day of Non-Violence at Hermann Park.

The event included patriotic songs and a Shramdhan activity in line with the Swachh Bharat campaign, celebrating its 10th anniversary. The Consul General, joined by the Eternal Gandhi Museum Board and the Indo-American community, also honored Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary.

India’s Permanent Representative, P. Harish commemorated the International Day of Non-Violence by paying respects to the Mahatma at the United Nations in New York. 

“His presence in UN building is a constant reminder of following his path of truth and non-violence and that Peace is the way,” Ambassador Harish tweeted noting that he looked forward to discussions on Gandhian values and the UN Charter later in the day.
