The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin partnered with Stamford’s Ferguson Library for WorldFest: “One City, Many Cultures,” held August 16.

GOPIO-CT represented India at the festival, which was organized by Yelena Klompus, a reference librarian and the library’s English Language Learner, citizenship and cultural programs manager, according to a statement from the organization.

The program began with welcoming remarks from Ferguson Library President Alice Knapp. GOPIO-CT opened the cultural performances in the library auditorium with “Dances of India,” highlighting the diversity of the country’s artistic traditions.

The festival celebrated the cultures that contribute to Stamford’s diverse community, with presentations representing Bangladesh, China, Haiti, Hungary, India, Mexico and the United States, the statement said.

Yashasvi Jhangiani coordinated the Indian cultural segment, with GOPIO-CT volunteers and performers contributing to the presentation.

GOPIO International Chairman Thomas Abraham, Ph.D., and GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani also attended the event.

“GOPIO-CT is proud to partner with the Stamford Public Library in promoting cultural understanding, community harmony, and appreciation of Stamford’s rich multicultural heritage,” Jhangiani said.

Over the past 20 years, GOPIO-CT, a chapter of GOPIO International, has developed into an active community organization. Its activities include interactive sessions with policymakers and academics, community events, youth mentoring initiatives and networking workshops. The chapter also collaborates with other organizations in the region on community-focused programs, according to the statement.
