Juan Pablo Segura, former Virginia secretary of commerce and trade, was sworn in as assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs on August 14, 2026.
Before joining the State Department, Segura oversaw economic development efforts for Virginia’s economy, which generates more than $710 billion in annual gross domestic product, and managed the commonwealth’s international trade portfolio.
During his tenure in Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration, Virginia set records in “new capital investment attracted, streamlined more than 35% of all regulations across the state, and retook the coveted #1 state to do business title by CNBC,” according to a State Department statement.
Following his swearing-in, Segura said in a social media post that it was a “great honor” to serve President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the American people as assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere affairs.
“Together with an exceptional team, we’ll advance President Trump’s vision for our region that is safe from cartels and narco-terrorists, creates prosperity for Americans and our partners, and secures our borders. Ready to get to work,” Segura added.
Before entering government service, Segura spent much of his career launching businesses and modernizing established industries.
“In 2014, Juan Pablo began his first company called Babyscripts that has gone on to revolutionize how prenatal and postpartum care are delivered through the power of technology,” the statement said. “The company’s platform was named one of the 150 most innovative healthcare technology companies in the world by CB Insights, and he has received multiple recognitions for his work, including Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Entrepreneur of the Year finalist by Ernst Young, and Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the DC Chamber of Commerce.”
Segura is a certified public accountant and a graduate of the University of Notre Dame.
