The World Bank Group (WBG) on June 11, 2025, officially reopened its Global Business Center in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s global operations.

The modernized facility, located in Taramani, was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, and Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the WBG, Wencai Zhang.

Established in 2001 with a modest team of 70, the Chennai Global Business Center has blossomed into a critical strategic hub for the World Bank. As of March 2025, it employs over 1,500 staff and contractors, providing essential support to 189 member countries and more than 130 World Bank offices worldwide.

Chennai was selected as the ideal location after a rigorous global search, primarily due to its rich talent pool, robust infrastructure, and investor-friendly governance.

“Through Chennai staff’s exemplary commitment and resilience over the past 24 years, the Chennai Global Business Center has grown to support several corporate functions of the World Bank Group,” stated Zhang. “It is a center of operational excellence and innovation for which we are immensely grateful and proud.”

Modernization for Future Growth

The extensive modernization of the Taramani facility anticipates future growth, offering a state-of-the-art environment with new collaboration zones and advanced digital infrastructure. The upgrade underscores the WBG’s long-term commitment to the region and its staff.

Auguste Tano Kouame, Country Director for India, emphasized the facility’s commitment to sustainability. “The Chennai Global Business Center plays a pivotal role in supporting the core operations of the World Bank Group. We are committed to supporting climate resilient architecture through LEED Platinum certification, as well as the Center’s energy-efficient utilities, including solar power and rainwater harvesting.”

The center will continue to provide crucial corporate services across a wide array of domains, including finance, accounting, procurement, administration, knowledge management, treasury, human resources, risk management, and information technology.

“The upgraded facility represents more than just an investment in infrastructure,” remarked Sunil Kumar, Center Head of the Chennai Global Business Center. “It signifies our long-term commitment to Chennai, our confidence in the potential of our outstanding staff, and our commitment to fostering a workplace that inspires excellence.”

The reopening ceremony was attended by senior officials from both the state and central governments, as well as leaders from other global capability centers, highlighting the collaborative spirit and importance of this strategic partnership.
