The American Hindu Coalition (AHC) hosted a meet and greet for Washington, D.C. mayoral candidate Rini Sampath on April 25 at the ISKCON of DC temple. The event drew hundreds of community members, leaders from multiple organizations, and several regional media outlets.

According to AHC, the gathering marked a significant moment for the Hindu American community in the nation’s capital.

The event coincided with the celebration of Sita Navami, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Goddess Sita. For Sampath, the first South Asian woman to qualify for the mayoral ballot in Washington, D.C., the occasion offered a meaningful “spiritual” setting.

Participation in the morning’s bhajans and aarti enabled the candidate to receive community blessings on a day traditionally associated with “resilience, virtue, and the strength of female leadership.”

AHC Chairman Shekhar Tiwari endorsed Sampath and called on the Hindu American community to come forward in support at what he described as a “critical moment.” According to the organization, community members described Sampath as “principled, hardworking, and rooted in service, a leader running not for a title, but to fix what is broken” in the nation’s capital. They also emphasized their collective support for her candidacy and the need for change.

“Our community is at a defining crossroads,” said Executive Director of AHC Maryland, Ankur Misra. “Seeing so many organizations and temples stand together today proves that the ‘civic silence’ of the past is over. We are no longer just observers; we are an organized, united front ensuring that our values and our families are represented at the highest levels of local government. Rini’s candidacy is a historic first, but our unity is what will make it a lasting movement.”

Community leader Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki spoke about key philosophical principles from Hindu traditions. She referenced “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti,” explaining that truth is one, though expressed in many ways.

Noting that “Hinduism teaches us not to divide or conflict over differing paths,” Dr. Thalanki cited “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” the idea that the world is one family, promotes “harmony and mutual respect,” in a global context.
