New York State Senator John Liu has highlighted the “historic” voter turnout among Asian American New Yorkers in the June 24 Democratic primary, where Indian American Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani secured the party’s nomination for Mayor of New York City.

“Yesterday, New York City’s Asian community made a huge impact in a historic primary election. Asian communities in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan turned out in droves to support Zohran Mamdani’s refreshing vision for the future of New York City,” Senator Liu said in a statement.

He described Mamdani’s “come-from-behind victory” as being driven in part by a wave of Asian American support, crediting Mamdani’s ability to genuinely engage with constituents “not by talking at them, but by listening to them, and communicating new ideas about how to improve our city for everyone.” According to Liu, Mamdani built a grassroots movement that gave voice to everyday New Yorkers and translated their concerns into a hopeful and forward-looking policy platform that the city had long been lacking.

“His victory, alongside Civil Court judge triumphs from Sheridan Chu and Eve Cho Guillergan, demonstrates the growing political power and engagement of our community,” he added. “I was proud to support Zohran, Eve, and Sheridan early on, and am exceedingly proud to note that the Asian American community, when inspired, mobilized, and empowered, can turn the tide in the most competitive races.”
