LG Hashmi Endorses El-Sayed in Michigan Senate Race

Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi has endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race.

Hashmi announced her endorsement after reviewing El-Sayed’s record, experience and policy priorities, according to a statement from her office.

“Dr. El-Sayed and I come from a shared tradition of education and public service, and we both understand the responsibilities that come with a focus on building resilient and healthy communities. My decision to endorse reflects my alignment with Dr. El-Sayed’s stated priorities, including an economy that works for everyone, Medicare for All, affordable housing, clean air, water, and soil protections, and support for labor and the rights of working people,” Hashmi said.

The lieutenant governor said the country is experiencing a period of profound “political instability,” adding that the “chaos” stemming from the Trump administration has consequences for families and communities.

“At this moment, we need leaders who are prepared to fight for an economy that works for everyone, defend labor protections, and champion a government that delivers on the issues that matter most,” she added. “For all these reasons, I am proud to stand with Dr. El-Sayed.”

El-Sayed welcomed the endorsement and praised Hashmi’s record in public service.

“Lieutenant Governor Hashmi has spent her career breaking barriers and opening doors for others,” El-Sayed said. “Her leadership has always been about delivering for the people she serves, from lowering costs and expanding access to healthcare to defending reproductive freedom and voting rights. I’m proud to have her support as we fight together to put working people back at the center of our politics.”

El-Sayed is campaigning for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in the 2026 election.
