India Awards $840,000 Grant for Tanzania Climate Resilience Project

India has approved a grant of $840,000 to support Tanzania’s efforts to strengthen financial resilience against climate-related disasters through the Climate Insurance and Resilience Programme (CIRP), following a request from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The funding will be provided through the Commonwealth Window of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, which was established by the Government of India to support countries across the Global South, according to a statement from the Permanent Mission of India (PMI) to the United Nations.

“India fully supports the Tanzanian Government’s determination to the proposed project, which shall serve as an effective vehicle in dealing with the climate-related hazards threatening lives and livelihoods,” the statement said. It added that the PMI is partnering with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) on the initiative, which aims to support the National Disaster Risk Financing Framework and Implementation Plan 2031 (NDRFFIP) by strengthening financial preparedness and climate resilience among vulnerable communities, including women, persons with disabilities (PwD), and low-income groups.

According to the statement, the project also focuses on strengthening Tanzania’s disaster risk financing framework to address existing gaps. It noted that national ownership will be ensured through the leadership of the Disaster Management Department under the Prime Minister’s Office, aligning the initiative with the country’s priorities and long-term strategic plans.

Established by the Government of India in June 2017, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund supports development projects in partner countries that contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The Fund attaches centrality to the principles of South-South cooperation and places priority on national ownership and leadership, equality, sustainability and development of local capacity. A sum of USD 150 million has been committed by GOI for this Fund till date,” the statement added.
