India’s athletes marked the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri with a series of gold medal performances at the Aichi Asian Games, taking the country’s overall medal tally past 75 and its gold count to 15.

Success in archery, boxing and wrestling made October 2 one of the strongest days for the Indian contingent. Boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen and Ankush, wrestler Sujeet, and the women’s recurve archery team all claimed gold.

India remained in contention for more titles over the final two days, with the men’s hockey and cricket teams scheduled to play their gold medal matches on October 3. The hockey team will face Malaysia, while the cricket team will meet Pakistan.

The Indian women’s hockey team was also set to face China in the final following the day’s gold medal performances in other sports.

In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain secured India’s first gold in the sport at these Games, defeating China’s Ziyi Bao 8-0 in the women’s 75 kg final.

Parveen added a second boxing gold with a closely contested victory over Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the 65 kg category. The bout was decided by a 3-2 split verdict.

Ankush completed India’s three-gold haul in boxing by defeating South Korea’s Minseong Kim 4-0. India finished its boxing campaign with three gold and three bronze medals, with Narender, Priya and Kamal Pokhariya earning bronze.

In wrestling, Sujeet claimed gold in the 56 kg category with a commanding 10-0 victory over Tajikistan’s Kudev Abdulmazhid.

India’s archers added one gold and two silver medals in the recurve team competitions, following their sweep of all three compound team titles.

The women’s recurve team defeated South Korea 5-3 to secure gold. The men’s and mixed teams earned silver, with the mixed team losing 3-5 to China and the men falling 1-5 to South Korea.
