Former U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm has endorsed Jay Vaingankar in his bid for Congress from New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.

Granholm, who previously served as a two-term Governor of Michigan and later as U.S. Secretary of Energy, most recently co-led New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill’s Transition Action Team focused on the energy affordability crisis. The endorsement follows Vaingankar’s campaign announcement of nearly $110,000 raised in the first quarter and a total of $260,000 raised overall as of April 2, according to a statement from his campaign.

“I am proud to endorse Jay Vaingankar because I know he will deliver cost-cutting policies that create economic growth and opportunity for Central Jerseyans,” Granholm said in a statement. “While at the Department of Energy, Jay worked alongside me and colleagues across the federal government to deliver historic levels of investment in clean energy and to cut costs for Americans. Jay is prepared to deliver from day one in Congress, to stand up to Trump and his billionaire friends, and to tackle the crisis of skyhigh utility bills that is crushing New Jersey families.”

According to the statement, Vaingankar is a Gen Z former official in the Biden White House and the U.S. Department of Energy, and the son of Indian immigrants, now running for Congress in Central Jersey.

During his tenure in Granholm’s Office of Policy at the Department of Energy, Vaingankar worked on implementing the Inflation Reduction Act. He also traveled across New Jersey and other parts of the United States to assist state and local leaders from both parties in accessing clean energy tax credits and reducing costs for working families. After leaving the Biden administration, he returned to New Jersey and worked in the solar energy sector with a focus on lowering utility bills and addressing the rising cost of living.

“I’m honored to have the support of Secretary Granholm, and grateful to have served under her leadership at the Department of Energy to create jobs, lower costs, protect our planet, and defend U.S. national security,” said Vaingankar. “At a moment when Donald Trump is rolling back that progress, we urgently need leaders with the energy to fight back and the experience to hit the ground running.”

Vaingankar is described by his campaign as the only candidate in the crowded NJ-12 race with prior experience working in Washington, D.C. The endorsement from Granholm highlights his policy background and adds momentum to a campaign centered on lowering costs, expanding clean energy, and promoting new leadership in Washington.
