Norway strengthened its position at the top of the medal standings at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games on Sunday, adding two more gold medals to build a commanding lead. The United States, which went without a medal on the opening day, rebounded strongly with two golds to move into second place on the medals table.
Canada remained in 12th position with one bronze medal, as five additional nations, the United States, France, Austria, Czechia, and Germany, joined the gold medal tally. Host nation Italy led the overall medal count with nine medals, including one gold and two silvers, while Norway followed with six medals, three of them gold.
In the men’s cross-country skiathlon (10km plus 10km), Norway completed a strong showing by claiming gold through Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo and bronze via Martin Loewstroem. The silver medal went to Mathis Desloges of France.
Norway secured its second gold of the day in the men’s 5000m speed skating, where Sander Eitrem set a new Olympic record with a time of 6:03.95. Metodej Jiler of Czechia took silver, while Italy’s Ricardo Lovello earned bronze.
France claimed its first gold medal of the Games in the biathlon mixed relay (4×6), with Italy finishing second and Germany third.
The United States opened its gold account in alpine skiing when Breezy Johnson won the women’s downhill event. Germany’s Emma Aicher finished second, while Italy’s Sofia Goggia took bronze.
Later in the day, the US doubled its gold haul by winning the figure skating team event. The gold-winning team included Madison Chock, Amber Glenn, Ellie Kam, Ilia Malinin, and Donya O’Shea.
Austria enjoyed a strong performance in snowboard parallel giant slalom, winning gold through Benjamin Karl and silver through Sabine Payer. In the women’s event, Czechia secured its first gold of the Games, with Zuzana Maderova finishing atop the podium.
Germany added to the list of gold medal-winning nations in men’s singles luge, where Max Langenhan claimed the top prize, making Germany the 10th country to win gold at the Games so far.
