Indian Consulate in Houston Marks 77th Republic Day With “Vande Mataram” 150th Anniversary Celebration

The Consulate General of India in Houston hosted a reception on February 3, 2026, to mark the 77th Republic Day of India, commemorating 150 years of “Vande Mataram.”

The event drew elected officials, representatives of public offices, members of the consular corps, Friends of India, and a large number of Indian American community members.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were Katherine Ho, Regional Director, OFM Houston; Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George; Gigi Lee, Chief of Staff representing the Mayor of Houston; Sugar Land Mayor Carol McCutcheon; Pearland Mayor Kevin Cole; and regional directors representing Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.

According to the Consulate, the City of Houston and the Greater Houston region cities of Sugar Land and Pearland issued proclamations honoring India’s Republic Day.

Addressing the gathering, Consul General D.C. Manjunath highlighted the “enduring spirit” of India’s “unity, heritage, and national pride.”

The reception featured cultural presentations, including renditions of the national song “Vande Mataram” through Indian classical music and dance forms, reflecting India’s rich cultural heritage and the significance of the occasion, the Consulate noted.

The event also included a curated exhibition on “Vande Mataram,” tracing the historical journey of the iconic national song.
