The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued a warning to parents regarding their mental health and well-being.
As a father himself, he acknowledged the joys of parenting but also highlighted the “stress, loneliness, and uncertainty,” that come with raising children in a rapidly changing world.
In a video message, on August 28, 2024, Dr. Murthy pointed out that parents in America are under significant pressure, facing challenges like financial concerns, worries about their children’s health and safety, and navigating the teenage years.
He also mentioned new difficulties, including managing technology and social media, the youth mental health crisis, widespread loneliness, and a culture of comparison that leaves many feeling inadequate.
“Parents report more stress compared to other adults. In fact, 41 per cent of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function. When stress is severe or prolonged, it can impact our mental and physical health, but it doesn’t have to be this way,” said Dr. Murthy. “Parents well-being is linked to the well-being of kids. It can affect their health, their learning and their futures. No society can thrive when parents and children are struggling. We need a fundamental shift in how we value and prioritize parents’ well-being, and we can all take steps to help.”
He noted that policymakers can help parents by ensuring paid time off for caring for sick children, providing access to affordable childcare, and reliable healthcare. Workplaces and community organizations should create supportive environments and policies, encouraging regular support among parents, family, friends, and coworkers.
Dr. Murthy also urged parents and caregivers to openly discuss the challenges they face, without shame or guilt, as raising children is important work that should matter to everyone. He concluded by saying that supporting parents and caregivers is a crucial step toward building a thriving society for all.
The 35-page report has four chapters including The Current State of Parental Stress and Well-Being; The Relationship Between Parental Stress and Mental Health; The Impact of Parental Mental Health; and We Can Take Action.
