The Washington has temporarily banned entry to the country to foreign nationals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan within 21 days prior to arrival, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

“The CDC issued an order suspending entry to the United States of foreign nationals who were in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days before arrival,” the CDC said in a statement on May 21.

The restriction is in effect for 30 days, after which the CDC will decide whether to extend or lift it. US citizens and green card holders are permitted entry, but they are not exempt from enhanced screening, the statement noted.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, they must be redirected to Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda an emergency and a threat to other states.

According to the latest data from Congolese authorities, 131 deaths from the virus have been recorded in the country. The previous Ebola outbreak in the DRC ended in October 2025.
