Every FIFA World Cup produces its share of surprises, both pleasant and disappointing. While the three co-host nations have reason to be encouraged by their teams’ performances so far, several countries are already facing the prospect of an early exit.
Turkey became the first team to be eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering its second consecutive defeat, falling 1-0 to Paraguay in Group D.
Making its first World Cup appearance in 24 years, Turkey saw its campaign come to an abrupt end after back-to-back losses in the group stage. The team exits the tournament without scoring a single goal despite creating numerous opportunities across both matches.
Turkey’s elimination was sealed by the fastest goal of the tournament so far. Paraguay’s coaching staff handed midfielder Matias Galarza a place in the starting lineup, and the decision paid immediate dividends. Galarza collected the ball near the edge of Turkey’s penalty area and fired a low shot into the bottom corner within moments of kickoff, giving Paraguay an early lead that it successfully defended for the remainder of the match.
Having previously lost 2-0 to Australia, Turkey’s hopes of advancing to the Round of 32 were extinguished by the defeat to Paraguay. Although Turkey still has one group match remaining against co-host United States, the head-to-head tiebreaker ensures it cannot finish higher than fourth place in Group D.
Paraguay moved into third place in the group with three points, level with Australia. The two sides will meet in their final group-stage match. Australia needs at least a draw to maintain its position in the race for direct qualification to the Round of 32.
Turkey is the first nation to be eliminated from the expanded 48-team tournament, although several other teams remain at risk of exiting when the group stage concludes. In addition to the top two teams from each group, the eight best third-placed teams across the competition will advance to the knockout stage.
The final whistle brought visible emotion from the Turkish players. Several sank to their knees, while others struggled to hold back tears as they came to terms with a campaign that ended far sooner than anticipated.
The disappointment was understandable given Turkey’s dominance in several statistical categories. The team registered 32 shots, recorded 51 touches inside the penalty area, earned 12 corner kicks, and enjoyed nearly 80 percent possession. Yet despite controlling much of the play, it could not find the decisive breakthrough.
Paraguay, meanwhile, delivered a disciplined defensive performance. Protecting its early advantage, the South Americans threw themselves into challenges, blocks, and interceptions throughout the match. When the final whistle sounded, Paraguayan players celebrated jubilantly with teammates and coaching staff after securing a hard-fought victory built on an early goal and resolute defending.
Meanwhile, in Toronto, large crowds created significant congestion around Toronto Stadium ahead of the match between Germany and Ivory Coast.
Although the venue is commonly known as BMO Field, FIFA regulations prohibit the use of commercial or corporate names during the World Cup, resulting in the stadium being officially designated as Toronto Stadium for the tournament.
Located along the Lake Ontario waterfront, the stadium drew thousands of fans to the Harbourfront district throughout the day. The influx of spectators caused heavy congestion in the area, and public transportation services, including streetcars operating on routes serving the stadium, were temporarily suspended at various times to manage the crowds.
The Harbourfront also hosts a dedicated FIFA World Cup fan zone, where supporters gathered to watch matches on giant screens and participate in tournament festivities.
