Renowned tabla maestro and composer Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on December 15, 2024, in San Francisco at the age of 73. He was rushed to a hospital on Sunday morning due to heart and blood pressure complications, where he later died.
Earlier this year, Ustad Zakir Hussain won three awards at the 66th Grammy Awards held in February, cementing his status as a global music icon. In October, he joined fellow Grammy winners Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia to announce the “As We Speak,” India tour. Scheduled for January 2025, the tour was set to showcase a unique blend of Indian classical music and Western jazz, with planned stops in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
Hussain’s illustrious career was marked by numerous accolades, including India’s highest civilian honors. He received the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
