A four-minute scoring blitz by pre-tournament favorites the Netherlands propelled the hosts to a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand in the men’s FIH World Cup before a packed Wagener Stadium on Sunday.
Tjep Hoedemakers scored twice, while Duco Telgenkamp, veteran Thierry Brinkman and Koen Bijen added a goal apiece for the Netherlands. James Hickson scored the lone goal for New Zealand’s Black Sticks.
After conceding the opening goal, the Dutch found their rhythm in the second half, drawing level before taking control of the contest. Three goals in four minutes during the fourth quarter ultimately put the match beyond New Zealand’s reach.
It was the opening game of the tournament for both the Netherlands and New Zealand. As the home side gathered momentum, the capacity crowd responded enthusiastically to every attacking move by the Dutch.
The Netherlands produced an increasingly aggressive display, finding gaps in a New Zealand defense that had remained resilient through much of the first three quarters. At the end of the third quarter, the match was still competitive, with the hosts holding a narrow 2-1 advantage.
The complexion of the game changed dramatically in the fourth and final quarter.
Wagener Stadium was awash in orange as a large Sunday crowd supporting the home team and tournament favorites filled the 10,000-capacity venue. A day earlier, India, also playing in its saffron-colored jerseys, had defeated Wales 3-1 at the same venue.
On Sunday, however, it was the Black Sticks against the Oranje.
The Netherlands, starting as favorites, earned its first penalty corner in the 14th minute of what had begun as an evenly contested encounter.
New Zealand then stunned the home crowd in the 24th minute when Hickson found the net to give the Black Sticks a 1-0 lead.
The Netherlands responded by earning its second penalty corner in the 25th minute, but New Zealand sought a video referral and the decision was reversed.
After halftime, the Black Sticks continued to challenge the Dutch defense, earning two penalty corners early in the third quarter.
The Netherlands restored parity in the 35th minute through an impressive sequence of passes, with Hoedemakers providing the finishing touch to make it 1-1. Buoyed by the equalizer, the Dutch became increasingly dangerous and nearly took the lead soon afterward.
Their sustained pressure eventually paid off. After forcing another penalty corner in the 41st minute, the Netherlands went ahead through Telgenkamp, taking a 2-1 advantage into the end of the third quarter.
The hosts then shifted into another gear in the final quarter.
In the 50th minute, Brinkman gave the Netherlands breathing room by scoring the third goal. Just a minute later, Hoedemakers struck again, completing his brace and extending the Dutch advantage to 4-1.
The Netherlands continued to press and earned another penalty corner in the 52nd minute. Bijen converted the rebound to make it 5-1. New Zealand sought a video referral, but the challenge was unsuccessful and the goal was upheld.
The three goals in four minutes effectively settled the contest, although the Black Sticks continued searching for a way back into the game.
New Zealand earned another penalty corner in the 54th minute, but the opportunity was lost after an umpiring decision. The Black Sticks sought a video referral, but the video umpire upheld the on-field decision.
The Netherlands earned another penalty corner in the 58th minute, but was unable to add to its tally, leaving the final score at 5-1.
