India’s 76th Republic Day: Celebrations Highlight Diaspora’s Role and Strengthening U.S.-India Ties

Washington DC: Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, unfurled the tricolor flag at India House on January 26, 2025, to commemorate India’s 76th Republic Day.

In his address, Ambassador Kwatra praised the Indian diaspora for their significant contributions to strengthening U.S.-India relations. As part of the celebrations, attendees at the ceremony also viewed the televised speech of India’s President, Droupadi Murmu.

In her speech, President Murmu highlighted the role of the diaspora, stating, “Our brothers and sisters living abroad have taken the best of our culture and civilization to different parts of the globe and have made us proud with their achievements in diverse fields. They have always considered themselves to be a part of the India Story.”

Reflecting on her earlier address during Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Odisha, President Murmu expressed confidence in the diaspora’s enthusiastic participation in building a “Viksit Bharat,” or a developed India, by 2047.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also extended greetings on this occasion, acknowledging the significance of the day. “As they commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India, we join them in recognizing its enduring significance as the foundation of the world’s largest democracy,” he said.

Secretary Rubio emphasized the growing partnership between the United States and India, calling it a defining relationship of the 21st century. 

“The enduring friendship between our two peoples is the bedrock of our cooperation and propels us forward as we realize the tremendous potential of our economic relationship,” he added. “We look forward to deepening our cooperation in the year ahead, including by advancing our joint efforts in space research and coordination within the Quad to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.” 

Across the United States, Indian Consulates also marked the Republic Day celebrations.

Houston

In Houston, Consul General Manjunath Chennarappa unfurled the Indian flag in the presence of community members. He also read President Murmu’s address, while the diaspora contributed cultural performances and patriotic songs to honor the occasion.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Secretary of State Jane Nelson issued official messages recognizing the importance of India’s Republic Day and the shared values between the two nations.

New York

The 76th Republic Day of India was celebrated with immense enthusiasm at the Indian Consulate in New York. Consul General Binaya Pradhan proudly unfurled the tricolor in the presence of members of the Indian diaspora and Friends of India.

The celebration featured soulful patriotic songs performed by students of Sur Taal Sangam, while Kassiyet Adilkhankyzy, a Bharatanatyam dancer of Kazakh origin based in New York, delivered a captivating Bharatanatyam performance that left the audience mesmerized.

Atlanta 

In Atlanta, Consul General Ramesh Babu, alongside the Consulate staff, members of the Indian community, and Friends of India, came together to hoist the Tiranga and mark the 76th Republic Day with traditional joy and pride.

The event was further enriched by a Jal Tarang performance by Shri Vikash Achutaramaiah and his team, which captivated the audience.

San Francisco 

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco celebrated the 76th Republic Day at the historic Gadar Memorial. Consul General Srikar Reddy unfurled the national flag and read the President of India’s Republic Day address to the nation.

Over 200 members of the Indian diaspora gathered with enthusiasm to commemorate the day, which also included vibrant cultural performances showcasing India’s rich heritage.
