India joined England in the next phase of the FIH Hockey World Cup after securing a thrilling 5-3 victory over traditional rival Pakistan in its final group-stage match.
The win was India’s second in three matches and secured second place in the group behind unbeaten England. Earlier, England defeated Wales 8-2 to record its third consecutive victory.
Pakistan and Wales were eliminated following defeats in their final group matches.
Backed by a large overseas Indian crowd waving the tricolor, India applied pressure from the opening whistle. Abhishek, who scored twice, tested Pakistan goalkeeper Raza Ali in the first minute, but his attempt was saved.
India earned its first penalty corner in the fifth minute. Although the opportunity did not produce a goal, India secured another penalty corner seconds later.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted the second opportunity to give India a 1-0 lead. India continued to press and earned another penalty corner in the sixth minute, but the attempt was blocked and deflected away.
Abhishek doubled the advantage in the 11th minute after intercepting a pass from Harmanpreet. India earned its fifth penalty corner two minutes later but failed to capitalize, taking a commanding 2-0 lead into the first-quarter break.
India extended its lead in the 20th minute after earning another penalty corner. Harmanpreet scored from a move that developed following a rebound, giving India a 3-0 advantage and completing his brace.
Pakistan responded in the 22nd minute when Shahid Hanan scored an opportunistic goal. India quickly restored its three-goal cushion, with Abhishek scoring his second goal to make it 4-1.
Pakistan earned its first penalty corner in the 24th minute, and Sufyan Khan converted it with a well-executed flick to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
India conceded another penalty corner following a back-stick tackle in the 25th minute, but Pakistan could not capitalize. India maintained its 4-2 lead at halftime.
India remained on the offensive after the interval. Its pressure produced a penalty stroke in the 35th minute when Aditya was brought down inside the circle while attempting a shot. Hardik Singh converted the stroke to extend India’s lead to 5-2.
India earned another penalty corner in the 38th minute and attempted an indirect variation, but the move was unsuccessful. Pakistan secured a penalty corner in the 41st minute but was also unable to convert.
India narrowly missed another scoring opportunity when a rising shot struck the crossbar and went out. The team carried its 5-2 advantage into the final quarter.
Pakistan reduced the deficit in the 46th minute after an Indian defensive error allowed Hanan to break through with only the goalkeeper to beat. He completed his brace and made the score 5-3.
Pakistan earned a final penalty corner in the 58th minute, but its indirect attempt failed. India held on to complete a 5-3 victory and secure its place in the next round.
