Kalpasi Indian restaurant in Herndon, Virginia, is seeing increased customer turnout on Friday evenings following the introduction of weekly live music performances.

According to Kalpasi owner Alex Nathan, the restaurant has experienced a noticeable rise in Friday night business since launching the live music program.

“There are more customers on Friday nights because of the live music,” Nathan said, adding that staff members have observed that patrons enjoy the music and the “lively and friendly” atmosphere.

“Michael and Sumi are professional singers. They can guide and help new singers as well…I see some new faces because of their music,” he added. The weekly performances are led by local singers Sumitra Sampath and Michael Fernando, who perform every Friday evening.

Regular customer Sridevi said the addition of live music has enhanced the dining experience.

“(The) food was always good, but the place is more lively now. People relate to the music, and it’s a lot more personal. And of course, Alex makes everyone at home,” she said.

Recalling how she learned about the performances, Sridevi added, “One of the nights, the singers were singing Ilayaraja, and I saw the flyer. I said to myself, had to be here.”

Another regular patron, Wendy, said she has noticed new visitors becoming repeat customers after discovering the Friday night performances. Asked whether the music has influenced how often she visits the restaurant, she responded: “Oh, definitely 100%… It just adds so much. I usually sit right by the bar because I love supporting them (the singers). I’m a big fan.”

Sampath has earned recognition through several local singing competitions and musical events. In April 2026, she won the DMV Indian Idol 4 Solo Singer Title. Her other accomplishments include winning the Duet Round in Indian Idol 3 and securing the Duet Round Title at Karuna Charities 2025.

Fernando has performed alongside several renowned artists from Indian cinema, including S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Yesudas, Chithra, and Janaki. He has also contributed as a playback singer in 15 feature films and multiple short films. Most recently, he won the duet round of DMV Indian Idol Season 3 USA.

Despite balancing full-time careers and family responsibilities, both singers dedicate approximately eight to nine hours each week to vocal practice. They perform songs in seven languages, including some they do not speak fluently.

Reflecting on their preparation and growing repertoire, Sampath said, “Singing at Kalpasi has been really good. As of now, we have a database of about 500 songs that we keep adding to as we learn new songs. We try out new genres and languages, as we get new requests for themes and songs from customers. We also have the public come and sing during open mic sections which is a big hit. We plan to do a ‘ghazal night’ sometime in June because of popular requests.”

Fernando said audience response has exceeded expectations. “After we started singing. We have seen totally full days, sometimes needing extra tables and chairs to be pulled up. Some people said they planned a Kalpasi visit in their schedules when friends and families visited from different states. They message us to makes sure we are singing before coming in and people recognize us in other places too. When I was at the grocery store, a couple came up to me and said, ‘Are you the one who sings at Kalpasi?’” he said.

Sampath expressed gratitude for the support she has received from both the restaurant and the local community. “Almost every week, I have different friends come in huge groups of people to Kalpasi to support me, and I’m so thankful for that. I am grateful to have such a supportive and uplifting community,” she said.

She also praised Nathan and the restaurant staff for creating a welcoming environment.

“Even though it requires a lot of planning and commitment, we have been enjoying it as it gives us immense happiness to see people enjoy our music after a long week,” she added.

The performers’ impact extends beyond customers, according to Kalpasi staff.

Seeta, a waitress at the restaurant, said the singers have become an integral part of the restaurant community.

“They not only just sing, but they share their emotions through music and convey it through the music. It definitely creates more of a personal vibe and connection. They are like part of our family. We miss them when they aren’t singing on certain Friday nights,” she said.
