Canada has announced a major diplomatic reshuffle, appointing four new consuls general to key postings across the United States, a move that comes as Ottawa seeks to strengthen ties with Washington amid ongoing trade tensions.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced new appointments to Canada’s consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago.
Among the appointees is former federal Health Minister Kamal Khera, who has been named Consul General in Los Angeles. Khera previously served in several roles in the Liberal government, including Member of Parliament, Parliamentary Secretary, and Minister of Health. She was defeated in the most recent federal election.
Reacting to her appointment on social media, Khera said she was “deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Canada in this new role.”
“At a time when the Canada-U.S. relationship is more important than ever, I look forward to working with Ambassador Wiseman and Team Canada to strengthen the ties that bring our countries closer together,” she said. “I will work to create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses and help build a stronger future for people on both sides of the border.”
The Consul General in Los Angeles serves as Canada’s senior representative in Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada, promoting trade and investment, advancing bilateral relations, and providing consular services to Canadian citizens.
The appointments announced Tuesday are:
- Andrea Clements has been named Consul General in Detroit, succeeding Colin Bird.
- Kamal Khera has been appointed Consul General in Los Angeles, replacing Zaib Shaikh and interim Consul General Sylvie Bédard. She is expected to assume the role in the coming weeks.
- Claire Kennedy will serve as Consul General in Chicago, replacing Madeleine Féquière.
- Susannah Pierce has been appointed Consul General in New York, succeeding Tom Clark.
