More than 25,000 people gathered in downtown San Jose on August 15 for the Association of Indo Americans’ SWADES 2026, a celebration marking India’s 80th Independence Day. The daylong event featured an India Day Parade with more than 80 floats and marching groups, along with participation from over 50 Indian American organizations.
Families, community organizations, cultural groups, elected officials, business leaders and thousands of Indian American community members joined the celebration of India’s diversity and heritage, as well as the enduring relationship between India and the United States, according to a statement from AIA.
“The parade provided a unique opportunity for Indian-American communities from across the region to come together and showcase the extraordinary diversity of India while celebrating their shared connection to their adopted home in the United States,” the statement noted.
Acclaimed Indian actress Taapsee Pannu led the parade as grand marshal of SWADES 2026. Known for her performances in films addressing social issues, Pannu has portrayed characters in stories centered on “women’s empowerment, humanity, social issues and meaningful messages.”
“Her presence brought an additional level of excitement to the celebration, with thousands of community members lining the parade route to welcome and cheer for the Grand Marshal,” the statement noted, adding that SWADES also highlighted the strong relationship between the Indian American community and the United States.

The flag-hoisting ceremony and related festivities were attended by Consul General of India in San Francisco Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen and California Assemblymembers Ash Kalra and Patrick Ahrens. More than 40 other elected officials representing communities across Silicon Valley also participated.
SWADES placed a strong emphasis on youth engagement and cultural preservation. More than 100 children participated in classical and film dance performances. Art, chess and essay competitions offered additional opportunities for children and families to take part in the celebration.
The programs reflected AIA’s commitment to connecting younger generations with India’s culture, traditions and heritage, the statement said.
The festivities continued after the parade with a free day-and-night mela featuring Indian food, shopping, cultural entertainment, family activities and live performances.
The evening program included Vijay Bharat, a cultural showcase featuring dances representing India’s diverse states and traditions. The presentation brought together music, dance and entertainment for thousands of attendees who remained through the evening.
AIA expressed its appreciation to the more than 25,000 community members who attended SWADES 2026. The organization also thanked its sponsors and volunteers for supporting the event.
Sanjiv Gupta CPA served as the grand sponsor, while realtor Lavanya Duvvi was the platinum sponsor. Travelopod participated as the travel partner, realtor Nagaraj Anniah supported the event as a presenting sponsor, and Lifology served as the educational partner.
Silver sponsors included Insta Service, Azad Financials, Vachi Silks, MyPursu, Sierra Pacific, Apex Consulting, Kavya Foods, State Bank of India and Shastha Foods, along with other community partners.
