University of Pittsburgh Student Sudiksha Konanki Presumed Drowned in the Dominican Republic; Investigation Underway

Twenty-year-old Sudiksha Konanki, from Chantilly, Virginia, a student at the University of Pittsburgh, is believed to have drowned in the Dominican Republic after going missing on March 6, 2025.

Three Dominican officials, who are part of the investigation told ABC News that Konanki was walking on the beach with six people on March 5th before she is believed to have drowned in the ocean.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) announced on March 9, 2025, that it is actively assisting in the investigation.

Konanki, an Indian citizen and permanent resident of the United States, was on vacation in Punta Cana with five female college friends when she was reported missing on Thursday, March 6th.

“The LCSO is working closely with our federal partners at the U.S. Department of State, FBI, DEA, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as well as the University of Pittsburgh police in support of the ongoing investigation by the Dominican National Police,” said LCSO in a statement.

A statement issued in Spanish by the Riu hotel chain stated, “We want to express our sincerest empathy towards the family and friends during this very difficult time. The safety and wellbeing of our guests are our highest priority, and we are committed to doing everything possible to assist in this situation.”
