A convoluted murder mystery, Amar Vishwas (named after the hero, who like all crime-connected forces, has a traumatic backstory!) is about a lawyer who decides to investigate on his own when he stumbles upon the alleged murderer one day.
Amar (Rajeev Khandelwal) convinces a stranger, Bahar (Urvashi Pardeshi) to surrender when she hides in his car as a hotel staff is chasing her. She is accused of murdering filmmaker Jessu Momin (Ali Hassan), with whom she was sharing a bed in the Sun N Beach hotel the previous night. Moved by her persistent pleas that she is innocent but cannot remember what happened that night, he takes up her case and says he will not charge his fees.
Up against him in court is public prosecutor Digambar Dixit (Ravi Behl), who has an axe to grind with Amar from the days when they had a common mentor in advocate Daruwala (Deepak Kriplani). He is set to decimate Amar in court.
Amar’s loyal team digs deep into the facts and puzzles surrounding the case, helped by a friendly police officer, ACP Khandekar (Saurabh Gokhale). Many potential suspects emerge as Jessu’s lascivious character surfaces. There are two struggling actresses, Achala (Pankhuri Gidwani) and Afreen (Soumya Dilwal) who Jessu had exploited, Afreen’s angry parents (played by Rushad Rana and Nysha Bijlani) and Jessu’s partner and financier Akbar (Aamir Ali), whose murder had been commissioned by Jessu because of severe differences that had cropped up between them. Also in this list was Bahar’s boyfriend, Sudarshan (Siddharth Shaw), a volatile man who is now undergoing medical treatment.
As the layers unfold, Amar obviously triumphs and Digambar gracefully acknowledges his defeat and Amar’s investigative tenacity.
The only problem I have with this well-acted series is the undue length of 10 episodes, which I feel could have been crispened to the normal 7 or 8. The plot is a shade too convoluted but sans any loopholes though I found myself—occasionally—as restless as the judge (played ably by Payal Arora), with the oh-so-convoluted new things being presented by the defense.
Rajeev Khandelwal and Urvashi Pardeshi are very sincere, and Amar’s team (played by Anil Chiranjeett, Garvita Sadhwani and Konika Sudha) are perfectly essayed. Ravi Behl as Digambar impressed me with his dignified arrogance as well as complacence, and Saurabh Gokhale made for that rare good-looking cop with a lovely smile, whose performance is pitch-perfect. Aamir Ali, Rushad Rana and Nysha Bijlani are good. Ali Hassan is the perfect rake as Jessu, while Siddharth Shaw impresses as Sudarshan. I also liked Barkh Bisht’s cameo as Amar’s batchmate.
Technically good, the series is well directed by Shashant Shah, whose initial film work (Dasvidaniya, Chalo Dilli) and sitcom (Sunit Sambhal Lega) scored high. He recently also directed the riveting Chiraiya. Shah does a neat job of the script and flow but, as said before, he could have trimmed the script rather the plot.
Overall, this is watchable fare.
