An Italian town with deep historical ties to the Sikh Empire came together on May 31 to honor General Robino Ventura, the Italian military officer who rose to prominence under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire.

A large gathering of members, volunteers, and activists from the UK-based Sikh Foundation, Sikhi Society, and the World Sikh Martyrs (Shaheed) Society, Italy, participated in a commemorative event in Fanale Millia, located in Italy’s Ferrara district, where Ventura was born.

Ventura, who left Italy as a young man to join the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, went on to become one of the most notable European officers in the Sikh ruler’s service. His contributions to the Sikh Empire continue to be remembered by both local residents and the Sikh community.

Organizers noted that on May 31, 2019, the participating societies had unveiled a portrait of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the town. Seven years later, community members once again gathered outside Ventura’s ancestral home to unveil a new artwork depicting the “Darbar of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.”

Speakers at the event reflected on the historical relationship between Italy and the Sikh Empire, recalling how several Europeans, including Italians, traveled to Punjab to serve in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s administration and military. They also paid tribute to Ventura’s life and legacy, noting that his ancestral home remains a reminder of the close historical connection between the region and the Sikh Empire.

The day-long celebration drew participation from local residents as well as members of the Sikh community from neighboring areas. The unveiling ceremony featured a new artistic representation of the Sikh Empire and highlighted the enduring interest in Ventura’s role in Sikh history.

Among those attending were Prithipal Singh, president of the World Sikh Shaheed (Martyr) Soldiers Society, along with prominent members of the organization, including Manjinder Singh Khalsa, Satnam Singh, Sewawa Singh Fauji, Jasvir Singh Dhanauta, Kamaljit Singh, Dhillon, and Jatinder Singh Pappy. Representatives of the Sikhi Society, including Jagjit Singh and Sonu, also participated in the event.

The celebrations concluded with langar served to attendees by Gurdwara Singh Sabha Novellara.
