Saif Ali Khan is back on OTT after Jewel Thief last year in a gritty desi avatar with Kartavya. Known for earning acclaim every time he steps into rustic and rooted characters, as in Omkara, the actor is now gearing up for another memorable performance with the Netflix film.
The recently-released trailer revealed Khan donning the police uniform once again, this time as a conflicted cop torn between his duty and conscience. Fans were thrilled to see the actor take on yet another intense role. While his intense screen presence became one of the talking-points online, many also praised his Haryanvi dialect, stating that it adds depth and authenticity to the performance.
Ahead of the film’s release, Saif opened up about learning the dialect. He said, “Getting the dialect right was probably the trickiest part because it is not just about learning lines, it is about understanding the culture and the nuances behind the words. Every accent carries a certain identity and honesty and that was important for me to capture.”
“It definitely took time and a lot of practice. I kept reading, listening, repeating lines constantly and slowly it started feeling more natural. I still feel like there is always room to improve, but director Pulkit was very happy with where we reached. Honestly, with enough practice, accents become much easier and I think I can pull off a fairly convincing Haryanvi accent now,” he added.
Saif Ali Khan has a truly exciting year ahead. The actor will be seen in Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan. He is also gearing up to make his return to the OTT space with the series Hum Hindustani.
Khan began his career with the 1993 Parampara after being removed from Bekhudi a year earlier. He has completed 33 years in the industry and his major hits include Yeh Dillagi, Bunty Aur Babli, Hum Tum, Race, Love Aaj Kal, Race 2and the web series Sacred Games. He has also acted in the Hindi-Telugu bilingual Adipurush and the Telugu release, Devara: Part 1 and has been a producer of films like Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail and Go Goa Gone.
Khan was among the early pioneers of heroes playing dark roles, with Omkara, Ek Hasina Thi and Being Cyrus. He has not had a film hit since Tanhaji—The Unsung Warrior as villain in 2020, but has survived on screen by dint of his perseverance and acting range. Adipurush saw him cast as Ravan as well.
