Nine Children Die from Measles or Related Symptoms in Past 24 hours: Death Tally Surges to 424

As Bangladesh’s measles outbreak continues to worsen, nine more children died in the country due to the disease or its related symptoms in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death tally of known and suspected measles deaths to 424.

Of the nine fatalities, three were confirmed to have fallen prey to measles, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data, bringing the number of children confirmed to have died directly from the disease to 68. The deaths were reported from Dhaka, where the disease has played havoc, reports The Daily Star.

With six more suspected measles deaths reported during the same period, the total number of suspected deaths is now 356.

Of the latest deaths, two were reported from Sylhet division, while one each was reported from Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions.

During the same period, 87 new confirmed cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases reported from March 15 and May 12 to over 7,024, with the DGHS recording 1,105 new suspected cases in 24 hours, bringing the total to 51, 567 across the country.

Of these 32,877 patients have already been discharged after receiving treatment.
