Mahaveer Singhvi, a 1999-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has assumed charge as the Consul General of India in Toronto, succeeding Kapidhwaja Pratap Singh, who had been serving as acting Consul General.
His appointment comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and Canada are gradually returning to normalcy following a nearly two-year period of strained ties. His arrival is being seen as a significant step toward strengthening and advancing the India-Canada relationship, with a focus on expanding cooperation in trade, technology, education, and innovation.
Over the course of his diplomatic career, Singhvi has held several key positions in the Ministry of External Affairs. His roles have included Joint Secretary for New, Emerging and Strategic Technologies, Counter Terrorism, and Central Europe. He has also served as Director for SAARC, BIMSTEC and Border Connectivity, East and Southern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Multilateral Economic Relations, in addition to serving as Deputy Secretary for Technical Cooperation.
He has represented India at multiple international forums and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences, seminars, and summits on a range of subjects.
Singhvi has received education and training from leading institutions, including the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, and the Universities of Delhi, Rajasthan, and Jodhpur. His academic qualifications include LL.B., ACA, ACS, ICWA, MBA, MBF, M.St. from Oxford, and B.Com (Hons).
He is noted for holding an extensive range of academic credentials within the Indian civil services.
He has received several honors and recognitions, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India’s CA Achiever in Public Services and Business Leader in a Government Department Award, as well as the prestigious British Chevening Fellowship to pursue the Foreign Service Programme at the University of Oxford, where he secured an “Overall distinction,” described as “rare and laudable” by the University in a letter to the Government of India.
Singhvi also earned the University Gold Medal during his graduation and the Rajasthan Board Gold Medal for securing first rank in the 12th Board Examination. He has been honored twice by the Governor of Rajasthan for his academic excellence.
In his new role, Singhvi is expected to work closely with Canadian stakeholders and the Indian diaspora to strengthen mutual trust, expand partnerships, and build a forward-looking relationship grounded in shared values and opportunities.
With a multidisciplinary professional background as a diplomat, lawyer, Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, MBA, and Cost and Management Accountant, Singhvi brings extensive experience in strategic, economic, and global affairs, as well as in bilateral and multilateral engagement.
