The Consul General of India in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, inaugurated the first Bharat Diwas celebrations at Britannica International School, according to a statement from the Consulate.
Addressing students, members of the Indian diaspora, friends of India, and the local Chinese community on January 30, 2026, the Consul General underlined the enduring relevance of “Indian civilization, culture and ethos,” which he said are shaped by a holistic worldview and values rooted in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
During his address, Mathur congratulated the school authorities on the successful implementation of a new curriculum that includes the teaching of Hindi at the primary school level. He encouraged the school to further strengthen Indian language instruction among students, guided by the philosophy of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.”

He noted that these ideas were also reflected in a vibrant cultural program organized on the school premises to commemorate Uttar Pradesh Diwas, which saw enthusiastic participation from students and their families.
Marking Martyrs Day, the Consul General paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and joined students in singing hymns dedicated to Bapu. The school principal and teachers, along with members of the Consulate team, highlighted the continuing relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings on truth and nonviolence.
According to the Consulate’s statement, members of the Indian professional community and educationists who attended the event expressed strong interest in India hosting the Global AI Impact Summit. They also acknowledged India’s strengths in information technology and artificial intelligence, and welcomed the recent signing of the comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union.
Thanking the school authorities and participants for their support, the Consul General expressed hope that Bharat Diwas celebrations, built around India’s Republic Day, would inspire students to promote and celebrate the idea of India more widely.
