Rep. Subramanyam Says NTSB Findings Show DCA Crash Was “Preventable” as Community Marks First Anniversary

U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) said recommendations released by the National Transportation Safety Board show that the DCA crash that killed 67 people last year was “entirely preventable,” a conclusion he described as offering little comfort to the families affected.

In a statement issued on the first anniversary of the crash, which claimed the lives of several Northern Virginia residents, Rep. Subramanyam said, “One year ago, our community mourned a terrible tragedy when 67 individuals lost their lives. Many of them were from Northern Virginia or had a connection to our community.”

He noted that the past year has been “unimaginably difficult” for the families and loved ones of the victims. He added that, even amid their grief, many families organized and persistently advocated for changes to ensure their loved ones did not “die in vain.”

“My colleagues and I will work to quickly implement the NTSB’s recommendations to ensure something like this never happens again,” Subramanyam said. “Congress and our federal government partners must continue to do everything we can to make the DCA airspace as safe and secure as possible.”

Rep. Subramanyam also recalled that last year the Military and Foreign Affairs Oversight Subcommittee announced the conclusion of its investigation into the midair collision at DCA and released a report examining the Department of Defense’s use of civilian airspace. He serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee.
