The US Department of State announced on May 6 the phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar. Diplomatic responsibilities for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now be handled by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.
According to the State Department, the decision prioritizes the safety of American diplomatic personnel and aims to optimize resource management.
“While our physical presence in Peshawar is changing, our policy priorities in Pakistan remain steadfast,” the Department said. It emphasized continued engagement with the people and officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promote economic ties, regional security, and American interests.
The US Mission to Pakistan will continue its diplomatic work through its posts in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, maintaining efforts to advance the bilateral relationship.
