India made a winning start to its ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title defense, defeating arch-rival Pakistan by 64 runs at Edgbaston under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.
While global attention remains focused on the FIFA World Cup, sports fans in India and Pakistan continue to closely follow contests involving their national teams across multiple sports. The victory gave India a 1-0 edge in a trio of high-profile India-Pakistan encounters scheduled this month. The remaining two meetings will take place in the FIH Pro League hockey competition in London on June 23 and June 26.
India’s men’s hockey team will look to continue that momentum when it faces Pakistan in the upcoming FIH Pro League matches. Pakistan joined the Pro League after receiving approval from the International Hockey Federation (FIH) last year.
Both teams enter the London clashes seeking their first victory of the current campaign. India narrowly lost 2-3 to the Netherlands in its opening match of the second phase of the Pro League, while Pakistan suffered a 1-5 defeat against Spain.
The June 23 and June 26 matches will mark the first-ever FIH Pro League meetings between India and Pakistan. India has played nine matches and Pakistan 10, with both sides still searching for their first outright win. India has earned four points through three draws, including one shootout victory, and currently sits eighth in the standings. Pakistan remains in ninth place and is yet to register a point.
The hockey rivalry unfolds alongside two major international tournaments. The FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, while England is staging the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the second phase of the FIH Pro League is being held in England and the Netherlands, with the hockey world also looking ahead to the FIH Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cups in Belgium and the Netherlands later this year.
At Edgbaston, India launched its Women’s T20 World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion. Deepti Sharma starred with a five-wicket haul, while Smriti Mandhana anchored the innings with a superb 68 as the defending champions produced a commanding all-round performance.
A crowd of 18,814 spectators packed Edgbaston, setting a new attendance record for an ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group-stage match. The fans witnessed a dominant display as India seized control of Group A with a convincing victory.
Sharma claimed the second five-wicket haul of her T20 International career as India, ranked third in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, posted 170 for six in its allotted 20 overs. Mandhana provided the foundation with an aggressive innings at the top of the order before Sharma helped bowl out eighth-ranked Pakistan for 106.
India will next face the Netherlands at Headingley on Wednesday, while Pakistan remains at Edgbaston to take on South Africa later the same day in the second of its five group-stage matches.
