The Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) marked World Press Freedom Day on May 3 in Washington, DC, emphasizing the critical role of a “free, independent press in supporting human rights, development, and global security.”
The observance highlighted ongoing challenges confronting journalists worldwide, including censorship, misinformation, and threats to their safety.
This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” reflected a growing recognition that press freedom is essential to building peaceful and resilient societies. When journalists are able to report freely and accurately, they help “prevent conflict, strengthen accountability, and foster informed public dialogue,” according to an HWPL statement.
The organization noted that as the media landscape continues to evolve amid rising disinformation and declining public engagement, journalism is increasingly moving toward solutions-oriented reporting. This approach aims to help audiences better understand complex issues while identifying potential pathways forward.
In line with these priorities, HWPL said it continues to advocate for peace journalism as an extension of press freedom. “This approach emphasizes reporting that explores root causes of conflict, includes diverse perspectives, and highlights opportunities for resolution,” the statement added.
HWPL Chairman Lee Man-hee underscored the role of journalists in advancing global peace, stating, “To attain world peace, all journalists must frequently report on peace.” He added that journalists are responding to this call by supporting efforts aimed at achieving world peace.
As part of the observance, HWPL convened approximately 220 journalists from around the world for its International Workshop on Peace Journalism Studies. The discussions focused on rebuilding trust in the media, addressing polarization, and promoting accurate, balanced, and solutions-based reporting. Participants also emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in journalism and ensuring that media contributes constructively to society, in line with the principles of World Press Freedom Day.
“As we observe World Press Freedom Day, we are reminded that press freedom is inseparable from peace,” an HWPL representative said. The observance served as both a recognition of progress and a call to action, urging continued support for press freedom and responsible journalism that advances human dignity and lasting peace.
