Delegate Srinivasan Secures Democratic Nomination in VA District 32 Special Election

Virginia House Delegate Kannan Srinivasan has announced his candidacy for the upcoming special election in Virginia’s 32nd Senate District. He aims to succeed Virginia State Senator Suhas Subramanyam, who recently won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democratic primary will take place on November 16th

Srinivasan stated that his campaign is focused on “ensuring Democrats retain their single-seat majority,” and intends to serve as a barrier against a “resurgence of Trump-era extremism.” He has a strong record in past elections, winning twice with over 60 percent of the vote.

Srinivasan became the first Indian-American immigrant to be sworn-in as a Virginia State Delegate on January 20, 2024. A 25-year resident of Loudoun County, Srinivasan currently represents House District 26. As a Delegate, he has been an advocate for women’s reproductive rights, voting rights, healthcare, and measures to prevent gun violence.

His candidacy has already garnered significant support, with endorsements from key figures such as Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, Congressman-elect Subramanyam, Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, and Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell. The power of balance in the Virginia State Senate hinges on this election.

“Kannan and I have gotten a lot done,” said Speaker Scott expressing that it is important to elect him in the upcoming election.

“Kannan Srinivasan is our best candidate to win this State Senate seat, keep Democratic control of the Legislature, and continue to deliver on our Democratic values,” said Subramanyam supporting Srinivasan’s candidacy. “I’ve worked closely with Kannan and admire his passion to bring people together, solve problems, and get big things done. In the Legislature, he worked to protect reproductive rights, advance gun safety, create jobs, and defend our democracy.”

Congresswoman Spanberger noted, “Over the next few years, I look forward to getting things done in Richmond for hardworking Virginia families. That’s why I’m supporting Kannan to serve in the Virginia Senate,” commending Srinivasan’s success in business and in public service. She emphasized that he is the “right candidate to deliver results,” for his constituents.

Srinivasan emphasized the critical nature of this race, underscoring that this seat is essential to protecting the Democratic majority in the Virginia Senate and preventing “MAGA extremists,” from reversing progress for Loudoun families. “We can’t let Trump take the Virginia State Senate too,” said Srinivasan pointing out that it is imperative to win this special election since women’s reproductive rights, common-sense gun regulations, healthcare, and America’s democratic ideals are under increasing attacks from the Republican party.

“I have a proven track record of winning elections, which is why Loudoun Democrats who know how to win elections are supporting our campaign. Over the coming days, I look forward to earning your vote and working together to ensure Donald Trump’s hateful, divisive rhetoric does not take over Virginia,” he added.

Srinivasan also received endorsements from Loudoun Senator Russet Perry, Loudoun Delegate Marty Martinez, Loudoun Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall, Loudoun Supervisors Mike Turner, Laura TeKrony, and Kristen Umstattd, Loudoun School Board Chair Melinda Mansfield, and Loudoun School Board Member April Moore-Chandler.

Two other Indian-Americans, Puja Khanna and Sreedhar Nagireddi are also running in the Democratic primary.
