Ambassador Vinay Kwatra celebrates India’s 78th Independence Day with the diaspora at India House

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, unfurled the Indian flag on August 15, 2024, at India House, to celebrate the nation’s 78th Independence Day.

Ambassador Kwatra, who assumed charge as the Ambassador of India on August 12th, emphasized the Embassy’s dedication to strengthening the “crucial partnership,” between both nations.

During his speech, he conveyed the joy of 1.4 billion Indians and shared greetings from the President to members of the Indian diaspora.

The celebrations at India House, also featured a televised address by President of India, Droupadi Murmu. President Murmu honored the sacrifices of freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Bhagat Singh.

Referring to diaspora members, she said “You are part of our family, making us proud with your achievements. You are great representatives of India’s culture and heritage.” 

She praised India’s economic progress over the years and highlighted the nation’s development in other areas such as science and technology, sports, women empowerment, climate change initiatives, education, and humanitarian progress.

Pointing out that India has gained a strong standing in world affairs, she noted, “After the successful completion of its G-20 Presidency, India has consolidated its role as the voice of the Global South. India intends to use its influential position to expand the scope of world peace and prosperity.”

The Embassy organized a painting competition themed, “My idea of India/Mother Earth,” to mark the Independence Day Celebrations. The competition attracted more than 250 entries from across the country. Ambassador Kwatra presented certificates to winners in various age groups.

A Bharatnatyam performance on “Jayate Jayate Bharat Mata,” was also presented by the Natananjali School of Dance from Maryland.
